William Shakespeare wrote these words centuries ago, but they remain true today: art, in all its forms, shapes our community. In consultation with a variety of local performing groups and with the community as a whole, it has been determined that the Greater Battlefords needs a performing arts centre -- one that is reflective of the community's diverse cultural roots. This centre must have full staging and rehearsal spaces, and will seat up to 374 people.
The benefits of a performing arts space are significant and many:
- Increase the quality of the many events that will move from substandard spaces
- Increase comfort, sight lines, acoustics, staging and support spaces
- Increase the number of performing events, as better facilities motivate local groups to mount and bring in more productions
- Provide space for events generated out of First Nations communities
- Increase the range and types of performing events -- potentially, the performing arts centre could host fashion shows, experimental film and video screenings, and community debates and seminars
- Provide a venue serving local citizens and visitors for special events such as trade fairs, conferences, conventions and festivals
A performing arts centre has the potential to be used by an extensive number of regional residents for a wide
range of activities including the more traditional performing arts like music, dance, drama and oratory, as well as other interactive activities such as conferences and festivals.
Our community needs a performing arts centre, because just as life shapes art, so too does art shape our lives. |
